Understanding EMI before you borrow

An EMI is the regular payment used to repay many loans. Understanding what changes it can help you compare borrowing options more thoughtfully.

What an EMI includes

An equated monthly instalment generally combines a portion of the amount borrowed—the principal—with interest charged by the lender. Early payments may contain a larger interest component, depending on the repayment method.

The three inputs that shape an estimate

The loan amount, annual interest rate and repayment tenure work together. A longer tenure can reduce the monthly instalment but may increase the total interest paid. A shorter tenure can do the opposite.

Look beyond the monthly number

A manageable EMI matters, but it is not the entire cost. Review processing fees, insurance, prepayment terms, late-payment charges and the total amount payable in the provider’s documents.

Use estimates as a planning tool

A calculator can help you test scenarios, but the provider’s final schedule may differ because of fees, disbursal dates, rate changes or rounding. Treat the result as an illustration, not an offer.
